A 34-year-old woman was fatally shot Monday on a popular walking trail in Nashville, Tennessee, and police are urging the public to come forward with tips as they search for a suspect.
Alyssa Lokits was found with a gunshot wound at about 5:30 p.m. on the Mill Creek Greenway off Old Hickory Boulevard, Nashville police said in a Tuesday statement.
“Lokits was exercising on the trail when witnesses heard her yelling for help,” police said.
Witnesses told police they saw a man on top of Lokits prior to shots being fired.
“The suspect fled the parking area in a dark colored 4-door sedan towards Old Hickory Boulevard. Lokits was discovered with a gunshot wound in the wood line,” police said.
Lokits, whose car was found at a trailhead entrance on Pettus Avenue, died at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, police said.
Nashville police declined to answer any questions about the slaying Tuesday afternoon and instead said to monitor their social media sites for updates.
Lokits’ relatives could not be immediately reached for comment.
Anyone with information about the slaying is urged to call 615-862-8600 or Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463. Any tipster who calls Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and can qualify for a cash reward of up to $5,000 in homicide cases, police said.
