Jon M. Chu, fresh off the set of the blockbuster “Wicked,” shared details about the potential “Crazy Rich Asians” sequel.
And it may not be what fans were hoping for.
“I won’t bring everyone back unless it’s worth it,” Chu, the director, told Deadline last week. “There’s too much on the line for everybody.”
Shortly after the 2018 release of “Crazy Rich Asians,” a sequel to the romantic comedy began moving forward. “Crazy Rich Asians” grossed $35 million within five days of its premiere, and it was the first major studio film to feature an all-Asian cast in 25 years.
“Crazy Rich Asians” skyrocketed several Asian American actors to stardom, including Constance Wu, Awkwafina, Henry Golding and Gemma Chan.
Chu also told The Hollywood Reporter during the “Wicked” media tour: “There are a lot of questions about Crazy Rich Asians 2. I always promised the cast, I will not bring them back unless we get a script that’s better and has as much urgency as the first movie. And I think we just haven’t gotten there yet.”
The movie is based on a 2013 novel of the same name by Kevin Kwan, which follows a Chinese American professor, Rachel (played by Wu), who travels to Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick (played by Golding).
Rachel is surprised to find that Nick’s family is one of the wealthiest in Singapore. Books two and three in the trilogy are titled “China Rich Girlfriend” and “Rich People Problems,” respectively, and continue to follow Rachel and Nick.
“To me, that sequel right now is that the Broadway musical that we’re working on. That’s very exciting and very fun,” Chu told Deadline.
Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures revealed in April that the “Crazy Rich Asians” musical, which will mark Chu’s Broadway debut, was in the works.
A news release described the new musical as “a fun, engaging and hilarious look at what can happen when young love collides with old money.”
