Smartmatic and Newsmax reach settlement in election defamation case

Smartmatic and Newsmax have reached a settlement in the voting technology company’s election defamation lawsuit against the right-wing news outlet shortly before the case was set to go to trial.

The lawsuit focused on Newsmax’s false claims that Smartmatic’s machines rigged the 2020 presidential election for Joe Biden.

A spokesperson for Smartmatic said Thursday that the company was “pleased to have secured the completion of the case against Newsmax.”

“Lying to the American people has consequences,” the spokesperson, Samira Saba, said in a statement.

Newsmax said in a statement that the litigation was resolved “through a confidential settlement.”

Details of the settlement were not immediately available.
