Planning is underway for Vice President Kamala Harris to deliver a “closing argument” speech in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, four sources familiar with the preparations confirmed to NBC News.
The final logistical details for the rally, which was first reported by the Washington Post, have not been nailed down, but it’s being timed for exactly one week before Election Day, the sources said.
NBC News has obtained a permit application from the National Park Service which shows the Harris campaign amended a request earlier this week to specifically ask for space on the Ellipse, where former President Donald Trump spoke on Jan. 6, 2021, before the Capitol riot. The insurrection is likely to come up in Harris’ speech.
The Ellipse is located between the South Lawn of the White House and the National Mall.
The permit application states that the event will likely take place in the evening and could accommodate more than 7,000 people. And while it does not state specifically who is speaking, it says the organization making the request comes from “Harris for President.”
The Harris campaign declined to comment.
Both Harris and her Republican rival Donald Trump have been criss-crossing battleground states in the weeks leading up to Election Day but this would be one of her largest events in the capital.
