A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of killing his father at a popular waterfall in Southern California, authorities said.
The identity of the suspect and alleged victim were not released.
The incident occurred on Saturday shortly before 3:30 p.m. on Mount Baldy Road, near Stoddard Canyon Falls, in the San Gabriel Mountains, according to statements from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies responded to a call about an assault with a deadly weapon, according to a Saturday statement from the sheriff’s department. On location, deputies found a man suffering “from trauma to his upper torso.” The victim was pronounced dead on scene, according to the sheriff’s department.
A man seen driving away from the scene was involved in a traffic collision a few miles away.
In a Sunday statement, the sheriff’s department said the man involved in the vehicle collision was the 19-year-old son of the victim.
“Based on evidence at the scene, coupled with statements made by the son and witnesses, the son was arrested and booked for murder at the San Dimas Station,” the sheriff’s department said.
The case will be passed on to prosecutors with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for potential charges, according to the sheriff’s department.
No representative with the county prosecutor’s office could be immediately reached for comment on Monday afternoon.
Stoddard Canyon Falls was featured in a Los Angeles Times’ article last year as a hidden gem after it gained popularity on TikTok.
